Now Korea is a country whose
people are thinner than the people in other countries. We didn't have enough
food 50 years ago because the economic system of our country was destroyed by the
Korean War. after that, our country tried to develop economy and partly introduced
American culture. As the economy of our country is changed dramatically , Korean
diet and eating habits are changing rapidly as well.
According to a study about obesity rate, as of 2009, 23.5% of Koreans over the age of 20 are obese. The reason obesity rate in Korea is increasing is that Koreans over the 20 age don't have enough time to cook by themselves because of work. If they cook at home, they can control the level of unhealthy element.
Second reason is that the western fast food is available freely. Many children and workers tend to eat fast food instead of Korean meals which are comprised of a bowl of rice, some soup, some vegetable. Compared to 15 years ago, the table for each meal used to consist of at least 80% vegetable. But these days, we can't see any chance of increasing the amount of vegetables that the people try to eat.
The way Koreans drink alcohol is one reason that the diet is changing. Whenever we drink alcohol , we usually eat something and Most workers are drinking alcohol to release stress. It could make our health worse. The foods with drinking alcohol or soda also make our weight fatter. But many people don't know what the problem is because they have already gotten used to having wrong eating habits.
As a result, Many people who are obese can't be expected to be healthy . So, not only the rate of obesity is increasing gradually but also the consumption of quantities of meat, sweets, snacks, and soda is increasing. Even if the food is essential for our body keep health, the most important thing is what kind of foods you eat. These days the people don't care about the result of eating food that contains high levels of cholesterol, or animal fat.
Koreans' awareness of nutrition is disappearing more and more. We shouldn't consume a wide variety of foods just for good taste. I think that eating habits is educated in school for the children to have awareness what is good for their health.
